It’s still dark and not much stirring; you can see the light morning fog slowly moving in the halo of the dock lights. A couple of sleepy pelicans lazily turn their heads as they watch you slowly pull away from the dock at Treasure Island Marina. The water is nearly glass smooth casting a perfect reflection of the marina as you look back one more time. Now with the breeze from the increased speed as you head out through the Grand Lagoon channel markers, thoughts race through your head that it feels like the perfect day is dawning.
There isn’t a worry in the world right now, only anticipation as the sky slowly gives hint that all the stars are about to disappear. Looking about you begin to notice the seabirds gradually filling the skies as they too leave their roosts and head off to begin their day as well. You’re been out for a bit now and are now slowly coming up near some sand bars as the whole world seems to be slowly waking up around you. The morning sky in Panama City Beach is painted beautifully as it reflects on the water before you. You notice a boil and cast your lure. Suddenly, with an explosion near the surface, you’re more than awake as your line is screaming off the reel as Capt. Jeff Moorman lets out a chuckle of approval, knowing that once again he’s outsmarted the game by getting you to the right spot when they are just beginning to feed with a voracious hunger at first light.
That’s right, First Light is the way to go if you want begin a great day fishing. Heading out with Capt. Jeff Moorman is one of the best assurances that you won’t be coming back in disappointed. He’s one of the locals who grew up on these Gulf of Mexico waters and has made a living at it since a boy as a deck hand. He’s learned enough secret and tricks to develop more than a handful of his own. His love for fishing has taken him all over these parts as competing and winning in tournaments from the Emerald Coast all the way to Boca Grande and down the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.
One thing Capt. Jeff knows, first light in the morning means the waters are his open playground where first come first served means catching fish and lots of them. There’s extreme excitement to be had when you hook into a huge Cobia or Tarpon on light tackle and it’s not just a matter of out muscling the fish but now you’re in personal completion with one of the scaly monsters who’s making a run for it as you patiently wear em’ down and bring it in. This is sport fishing at its finest.
Capt. Jeff Moorman has 2 boats, both named First Light – a sweet 22 foot Cape Horn Bay Series boatpowered by Honda and fitted with a custom tower for sight fishing. It’s perfect for a small group but still comfortable for up to four. Capt. Jeff’s second charter is a beautiful 34 year old topaz with a new engine; both boats are fast, modern and fully equipped for every style of fishing and providing all first class tackle.
Whether you want to run a day trip or a full day, Capt. Jeff knows how to chase down the fish memories that will last a lifetime. First Light Charter’s can have you chasing the cobia from the 150 mile stretch from Mexico Beach to Orange Beach Alabama, where all the world records for cobia come from. Perhaps you’d rather go out quick fishing the crystal clear flats of beautiful St. Andrews bay to the emerald green waters around Panama City Beach’s many barrier islands to target everything from trout, bluefish, flounder, redfish, cobia, tarpon, and mackerel. Make it a full day of Tarpon fishing. It’s exhilarating watching these silver giants breaking water, dancing to getaway.
Capt. Jeff’s experience has the well deserved respect of other pros and has captured the industries’ attention. He has been featured on fishing shows such as Sport Fishing Magazine TV, Georgia Outdoor Adventures TV, The Outdoor Life Network, and the Sunshine Network as well as being the focus in many articles in such notable magazines as Florida Sportsman, Shallow Water Angler, and Field and Stream. Having won and placed in too many tournaments to list, Capt. Jeff has a list of eager sponsors wanting to capitalize on his experience such as Bass Pro Shops, Berkley, Abu-Garcia, Stren, Spiderwire, Fenwick, Mitchell, and 7Strand.
